Becoming a firefighter

Last updated  08 November 2018

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service can offer you a satisfying, exciting and varied career.

becoming a Firefighter

We are one of 45 separate Fire Services in England and are run under the command of the Chief Fire Officer. We operate out of 14 Community Fire Stations five of which are crewed by Wholetime (full-time) firefighters and one station is day crewed.  We also operate an On-call Duty System (RDS) which covers eleven stations (two of these are on Wholetime stations and one on the day crewed station).

There are benefits in having personnel who reflect all aspects of our local communities and our Firefighters (Wholetime and On-call) are both men and women representing the communities they live and/or work within.  We wish to continue to draw firefighters from all the different cultures within Bedfordshire and welcome applicants from these under-represented groups such as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and women.

We offer career opportunities for our firefighters both to take on command responsibilities and to specialise in areas such as training and development or special skills such as dealing with hazardous materials. Those who show potential and a desire for advancement have the opportunity for promotion to the most senior management positions.

To join us as a firefighter you will need to meet these minimum criteria and pass our recruitment process.

  • You have to be a minimum of 18 years old at the start of your employment.

  • Live in or within 10 miles of the Bedfordshire border. (Please note that postcode and proof of address will be required).
