Area Fire Safety Manager (Station Manager) Vacancy

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is searching for a dynamic individual to undertake Area Fire Safety Manager (Station Manager B).  This post is conditioned to the Flexible Duty System.

 

Applications are invited from current substantively appointed Station Managers and competent Wholetime Duty System Watch Managers, who are currently serving with a UK Fire Authority, to transfer or receive promotion to Station Manager B Area Fire Safety Manager within Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

We are looking for individuals who are effective leaders and have the ability to motivate others.  They should be willing to contribute to making the community safer and be flexible in their approach to tasks and new initiatives.

 This is a public-facing role and it is essential to have the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English.

 To be eligible, Substantive Station Managers and Competent Whole Time Duty System Watch Managers must:

  • Hold relevant specialist qualifications/training in legislative fire safety to the level of Fire Safety Inspector at the Fire Service College or equivalent provider, e.g. Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety or equivalent,  and

  • Have  demonstrable significant experience (minimum of 2 years) working in this area at this level.

Applicants should also be able to demonstrate on the application form in the the Supporting Statement section how they meet all the Essential Critiera, and if applicable, the Desirable Criteria for the post (as outlined in the Area Fire Safety Manager Guidance document).

If a Watch Manager applicant does not hold the IFE Level 4 Certificate papers then they may be offered a substantive appointment with the conditional requirement to successfully attain these papers within 2 years of joining the Service. 

All substantive and temporary promotions at the role/scale of Station Manager B are conditioned to the Flexible Duty System (FDS). Officers conditioned to the FDS system must provide a cover base in accordance with the provisions of Service Order V10 12/3 Flexible Duty System (FDS) Standby/Call Out Base.

 To Apply:

The selection process will involve 3 stages:

  • Completion of an application form
  • an Incident Command Assessment at Level 2, and  Case Study exercise
  • a Presentation and Structured Interview assessing the ability to perform the roles and responsibilities undertaken by Station Manager posts within Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, including those for operational command and fire safety specifically.

 Those successful at shortlisting will be expected to undertake their Incident Command Assessment at Level 2 and Case Study on 1st September 2020.   It is anticipated that the selection process (presentation and interview) will take place w/c 14th September 2020.

 Please could candidates indicate their availability for attendance on these dates when submitting their application. All dates are provisional, and subject to change at the discretion of the Service.

 Successful candidates will be required to serve at any location in the Service.  They will be required to gain pre-employment clearances, including a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance and pass a Service Medical and Fitness Test before appointment will be offered.  Successful applicants will be required to undertake a probationary period of 6 months and those successful on promotion will be required to satisfactorily complete the Station Commander Development Programme.
