BFRS Safety House

Score one point for every yes answer to the questions below:

  1. There is at least one working smoke alarm on each floor level in your home and it’s tested every week
  2. No one smokes or uses e-cigarettes inside your home.
  3. Ashtrays are NOT left on armchairs or other places where they could fall or be knocked over.
  4. No one cooks after drinking alcohol.
  5. We don’t use a traditional chip pan.
  6. We clean our oven, grill, microwave or extractor fan regularly to prevent the build-up of grease or cooking fat residue.
  7. We switch off non-essential electrical appliances before we go to bed (kettle, toaster, TV, DVD player, games consoles, etc).
  8. We don’t leave electrical appliances such as mobile phones, laptops, or tablet computers charging overnight and always switch off hair straighteners.
  9. We don’t put the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher on overnight.
  10. We never use block adapters or extensions leads for multiple appliances.
  11. We do not use portable heaters such as fan heaters, ceramic heaters, gas heaters or paraffin heaters.
  12. We have a wood-burning stove or open coal fire and we get the chimney or flue swept every year before we use it after the summer.
  13. We don’t use lit candles, incense sticks or oil burners, plug in air fresheners or use heated wheat bags.
  14. We always close inside doors at night before going to bed, unplug or switch off electrical appliances (unless they are designed to be left on, such as fridges and freezers) and extinguish candles, oil burners or incense sticks when we go to bed.
  15. We have an escape plan, so that everyone in the house knows what to do if the smoke alarm goes off during the night.
  16. Our hallways, stairs and landings are kept clear enough to allow safe and easy escape.
  17. No one in our household has a hearing, visual or mobility impairment that would prevent them from being woken by a smoke alarm or escape in the event of a fire.
