At 10.23am on Sunday (15) crews from Luton, Stopsley and Dunstable and an incident command unit from Leighton Buzzard were called to a persons reported fire in the downstairs of a two-storey property in Ellenhall Close, Luton.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and a covering jet to extinguish the fire and a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots.
Police and ambulance crews attended the scene, but despite their efforts, the occupant — a woman in her 60s — was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Following a thorough fire investigation, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, most likely started by smoking materials that had not been properly extinguished.
The Service would like to take this opportunity to gently remind the public of important fire safety precautions for those who smoke, or who live with someone who does. If you would like to refer someone for a free Home Fire Safety Check, please visit: Home Fire Safety Visits
