At 7.25pm on Friday (18), crews from Bedford, Biggleswade, Kempston, Leighton Buzzard, Potton and Shefford were called to a fire in a brick outbuilding on Edworth Road, Langford.
The fire involved a 4m x 6m brick outhouse containing a diesel engine irrigation pump with approximately 600 litres of fuel. The outbuilding was 100 per cent destroyed by fire, with around 10 per cent of an adjacent 30m x 40m warehouse damaged by heat and fire.
Firefighters used one hose reel jet, a foam branch, and a thermal imaging camera. Crews wearing breathing apparatus also used breaking-in tools and accessed drain covers to assist with containment.
The incident commander liaised with the Environment Agency. Around 12.5 litres of foam and 6,000 litres of water used during firefighting were contained in surrounding ditches and drains. Advice was given to the farmer, and the incident was left in the care of the owner.
The cause of the fire was accidental.
