Businesses urged to strengthen security against arson threats

Arson remains one of the leading causes of commercial fires across the UK. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) is urging local businesses to take immediate action to protect their premises from the increasing threat of arson attacks.
Arson attacks can have devastating consequences - not only causing financial loss and operational disruption but also putting lives at serious risk. Many incidents are opportunistic and preventable through better security, waste control and end-of-day routines.
Key areas businesses should prioritise include:
Fire risk assessment
- Ensure your fire risk assessment is up to date
- Make sure the risk of arson has been considered as part of your fire risk assessment
Security measures
- Ensure all doors and windows are closed and locked when the premises is unoccupied
- Install and maintain CCTV, motion-sensitive lighting, and quality locking systems
- Restrict access to areas with flammable materials
- Consider intruder alarms or patrol services for higher-risk sites
Waste management
- Store rubbish and combustible waste in secure, lockable bins away from buildings
- Prevent the build-up of waste near exits and loading bays
- Arrange regular waste collections to minimise fuel for potential fires
End-of-day procedures
- Carry out a thorough check of the site before locking up
- Switch off ignition sources such as heaters and electrical appliances
- Secure all internal and external entry points
- Ensure skips and bins are locked and stored safely
Group Commander, Mark Garrett said: "We’re asking all local businesses to take arson prevention seriously. It’s reported that following a serious fire, 25% of businesses don’t re-open.
“Simple measures, such as better waste storage and double-checking all doors are locked, can be the difference between ‘business as usual’ and a devastating fire. Prevention really is the best protection."
BFRS offers guidance and support on fire safety compliance and risk reduction to businesses of all sizes. Business owners concerned about their current measures are encouraged to get in touch.
