Verdict Reached in Sharnbrook Explosion Case: BFRS Response Highlighted
Following a trial at the Old Bailey, which concluded on Friday, 19 April, Matthew Haydon, 48, was found guilty of causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property under the Explosive Substance Act 1883, in his home in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire.
Back in April 2023, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) swiftly mobilised resources to a property in Sharnbrook following reports of an explosion. The incident caused significant disruption to the local area, requiring a resource-intensive response from BFRS. Their presence on the scene for several days, along with their support to the Tactical Co-Ordinating Group, underscored their commitment to public safety and emergency response.
The complexity of the situation necessitated the involvement of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Squadron from the Ministry of Defence (MOD), identifying and making safe some of the 153 chemicals discovered within the property. Following this, BFRS's Police Officers Liaison and Search Advisor (POLSA) were able to enter the premises and conduct thorough searches, including nearby wooded areas.
This verdict not only brings closure to the legal proceedings but also serves as a reminder of the critical role played by emergency services, including BFRS, in ensuring public safety and security. It underscores the importance of their rapid response and coordinated efforts in the face of challenging situations.
