WARNING: Mixing household cleaners poses serious health risk, fire service urges public to take caution

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) is issuing a critical safety warning to residents due to the hazardous chemical reactions that can be caused by mixing common household cleaning products.
Across Bedfordshire, fire crews have been called to a number of chemical-related emergencies in homes, where well-intentioned cleaning routines have gone dangerously wrong. Everyday cleaning products, when combined, can create toxic fumes capable of causing serious injury or even death.
Residents have unintentionally triggered chemical reactions by mixing substances such as bleach with toilet cleaner or ammonia-based sprays, producing dangerous gases that can rapidly affect breathing and overall health. These incidents have required specialist response teams equipped to handle hazardous materials.
Group Commander Mark Garrett from BFRS said: “People often think combining cleaning products makes them work better, but it’s a potentially deadly mistake - even supermarket-bought items can release toxic gases when mixed.
“Always read the label, follow instructions, and never mix products. If you do accidentally mix chemicals and feel unwell, evacuate the area immediately and call 999. Our teams are trained to handle these situations safely.”
How to stay safe when using cleaning products:
- Never mix cleaning products, even if they seem similar
- Read all labels and follow instructions carefully before use
- Keep products in their original containers with labels intact
- Ensure proper ventilation while using chemical cleaners
- Store cleaning chemicals safely, away from children and pets
- Rinse surfaces thoroughly between using different products
- Avoid DIY blockage solutions– seek professional help
- Dispose of unused or expired chemicals responsibly – contact your local council for disposal advice
Remember: Clean smart – don’t mix and risk it.
