Why work in Bedfordshire

Our County

Bedfordshire covers an area of approximately 123,500 hectares and borders with Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire and is only 45 minutes from central London by train. It has a growing population currently estimated around 655,000.

Bedfordshire in UK map

One of England's smallest yet most diverse counties

More than half of Bedfordshire's residents live in its largest towns, Luton and Bedford, which have diverse and often transient communities, alongside smaller market towns and rural parishes. Challenges range from rural fire and road safety concerns to sleeping risks and high-rise building fire safety.

Community Risk Analysis 2022
Bedfordshire authority areas

The area consists principally of rural landscape and incorporates a number of market towns, including Ampthill, Biggleswade, Woburn and Leighton Buzzard. Larger towns include Bedford, Luton and Dunstable. Luton, our largest town, has some of the most deprived wards in the Country and has many of the characteristics and challenges of a London borough including several high rise buildings.

In addition to our large and very diverse community we also have a number of special risks including London Luton Airport, along with a significant road network including the M1 and A1 motorways. Bedfordshire is growing as a national distribution hub and has a number of large industrial sites and warehouses. We have three rail networks in the County one of which is the busiest commuter rail link in the country running from Bedford south to London and beyond. Within our boundary we also have a significant stock of heritage buildings and environmental sites of special interest. Countywide rivers present us with special problems during spate flooding conditions.

Why Bedfordshire?

If you are looking for a leadership opportunity in a fire and rescue service with a great reputation and a strong track record of visible leadership and delivering positive outcomes for our communities then Bedfordshire could be for you. Join our Service, to play a vital role building upon our successes to date and striving to deliver on our Mission working together to keep Bedfordshire safe.

Bedfordshire covers an area of 480 square miles and has a growing and diverse population currently estimated around 655,000. Growth projections indicate this will grow by up to a third in the next decade or so.

Bedfordshire is a wonderful county to live in, whether you want a quiet market town, a historic ruin to explore, countryside to admire or to take a walk along Bedford's beautifully landscaped Embankment, you’ll find delightful views and plenty of greenery to explore and get lost in.

Bedfordshire also boasts a number of large towns and villages. These include Woburn’s historical sites; Woburn Abbey, Woburn Safari Park and a Center Parcs, which offer days out for the whole family. And if this wasn't enough, you're only an hour's drive from London and 20 minutes from Milton Keynes Shopping Centre. It is served by extensive transport infrastructure including the M1 and A1(M) motorways, three major rail routes, London Luton Airport and county wide rivers.

With excellent transport links to the capital and surrounding cities like Oxford and Cambridge. Bedfordshire is ideal for people that love easy access to London while living surrounded by beautiful countryside. For a day in London, you can jump on the train and be there within the hour or jump in the car and you can be exploring the lovely streets of Cambridge also within an hour.

Bedfordshire has a number of higher education establishments including: The University of Bedfordshire, Central Bedfordshire College, Dunstable College, Shuttleworth College, De Montfort University, Barnfield College, Cranfield University and Luton 6th Form College offering a wide range of courses including vocational training.
